Biography
Sam Gibson, born in Nashville, TN, grew up in Chicago and Detroit (during the Motown era). Sam speaks with a lot of love and respect about his childhood on Chicago's south side, an area that spawned a host of jazz influenced singers, including Mel Torme and Lou Rawls. After serving in Viet Nam, Sam returned to Chicago and finished his college education at Governor's State College, earning a Masters degree in psychology. His musical career took a back seat to counseling in various mental health disciplines. However, at the insistent urging of friends and family, Sam started to sing again and was enthusiastically accepted, not only by Chicago, but audiences across North and South America. Sam Gibson was an enormously gifted, seasoned singer and entertainer. He combined a timeless pop/jazz singing style with a handsome appearance and sensual sound. Sam's resonant baritone voice climbed with ease through the far ranges of tenor and falsetto, exhibiting his phenomenal versatility, whether he was singing ballads or high energy jazz. Elegant, exuberant and stirring, Sam's sound was a cross between greats such as Johnny Mathis, Nat Cole, Johnny Hartmen and Al Jarreau. Yet, it was his own style and intimate audience rapport that transports his listeners through the channels of human emotion. Sam was a singer, in the true sense of the word, who knew how to communicate with romantic impetuosity with his warm and exciting voice and elegant stage presence in a wide range of settings, performing at clubs, concerts and festivals. Sam was also active in singing TV and radio jingles in commercials and modeling. Sam had the same assurance that only an exceptional talent and technique can bring. He has the unerring taste and ability to infuse something new and exciting in each rendition of a song. Sam Gibson will be deeply missed by all of his fans, friends and family.
